How does Invisalign work?

Like traditional braces, Invisalign works on the premise of maneuvering teeth and the jaw into their new and improved position by exerting consistent, gentle force onto them. However, unlike braces, it doesn’t use brackets, wires and elastics to create this force. Instead, Invisalign uses a series of custom-designed clear plastic aligners that sit over the top of teeth in a manner not dissimilar to a bite guard.

The series of aligners used in an Invisalign treatment program is designed using cutting-edge technology that uses images of the teeth and jaw to determine their start position and maps the journey that they would need to make in order to get into the best possible alignment. This journey is then converted into a series of different steps with an aligner designed and created to represent each. Patients must then wear the aligners in the exact order directed in order to move the teeth in line with their treatment program.

One of the most notable things about Invisalign is that while the aligners are removable, for the treatment to be successful, they must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours each day, only being taken out to eat, or to clean the teeth and aligner. This is a significant commitment, but if the aligners are worn exactly as directed, it is possible for patients to achieve a hugely improved smile without the need for conventional braces.

How long does the Invisalign treatment program take?

Every patient is unique and therefore it is impossible to say exactly how long your Invisalign treatment program would take. In most cases, patients can expect to wear their aligners for between 12 and 24 months, depending on the severity of their bite or alignment issues. We will be able to give you a fairly accurate estimate when you attend your consultation appointment.

Why choose Invisalign?

Although orthodontic braces have long been the gold-standard treatment for bite and alignment issues, Invisalign is rapidly becoming the preferred option for a number of patients. Here is why so many people are choosing Invisalign to correct their smiles:

Invisibility

One of the best things about Invisalign is that the aligners are made from clear plastic. This means that once they are in place over the teeth, they are virtually invisible. There are no metal wires or brackets that you need to worry about making you feel self-conscious. Instead, it is nearly impossible to see that you are wearing anything over your teeth at all!

No food restrictions

Patients who have braces are forced to face a number of food restrictions. Anything particularly, hard, sticky or chewy is off-limits, as are foods that break up into lots of sticky particles that could get stuck in your braces – such as popcorn! Many patients find this aspect of their orthodontic care frustrating. Fortunately, Invisalign aligners can and should be removed for eating, meaning that you don’t need to make any compromises about the foods that you enjoy.

Easier oral hygiene

Have you tried brushing your teeth while wearing braces? Let us tell you, easy it is not. Getting your brush in round brackets, wires and elastics can be very fiddly and time-consuming, and many patients get frustrated with the process. Unfortunately, failing to look after your teeth can render the Invisalign process pointless since poor oral hygiene almost always ends in cavities, gum disease and more. Invisalign aligners can be popped out quickly and easily, making it simple for you to maintain great oral hygiene.

Improved comfort

A mouth full of metal was never going to be comfortable, and many braces wearers report sore mouths. However, Invisalign aligners, which are made from clear plastic, sit snugly over the top of your teeth. There are no sharp elements or invasive treatment to your teeth and mouth. Simply slot your Invisalign aligners over your teeth and you are ready to start sharing your smile with the world.

Fewer visits to your provider

Unlike braces, which require you to visit your orthodontist every 6-8 weeks to tighten your brace, with Invisalign you simply move onto the next aligner in the series when the time is right. You will of course still have the progress of your treatment monitored but in far fewer visits.
